Dr. Janet Berreman is a pediatrician and public health physician, with many years of experience, who for the past two years has served as the Kauai District Health Officer.
Berreman will use the current measles outbreak in Washington state as an example to discuss the science of epidemiology and the scientific basis for public health actions in controlling diseases. The epidemiology of the measles has taught us much about how the disease spreads, how it can be controlled, and the impacts it has on community health. She will cover how physicians and public health practitioners use that knowledge to protect patients and communities. The topic is timely because of the on-going measles outbreaks around the world.
Because of our high volume of national and international visitors Hawaii is susceptible to exposure from outbreaks elsewhere.
