How do the immune system and the microorganisms naturally present in the body “talk” to each other? This is one of the compelling questions for medical science today.
Until recently scientists knew that a large number of bacteria are naturally present in and on every surface of the body. They thought the immune system responded only to wounds or leaks that let bacteria into the rest of the body. This is only partly true. The community of organisms-the microbiome-is an important part of making you you. The immune system and the microbiome are constantly communicating.
This talk, led by Dr. Jeff Frelinger, will focus on 2 conversations-how dangerous bacteria alter the immune response for their own benefit, and how a newly discovered commensal bacteria manages to get a toehold. Please join us in the Conference Room at Lihue Public Library.
