All are invited to the Kick-Off event for the Hawaii State Public Library System’s 2023 Summer Reading Challenge @ Lihue Public Library

Celebrate the most cherished plant in Hawaiian culture. Brought to Hawaii by Polynesians, taro (kalo) is considered the staff of life for Hawaiians.  Kalo also symbolizes deeply-held spiritual beliefs about prosperity, feritility, long life and identity.

Kalo farmer Adam Asquith will talk about the historical significance of kalo to Hawaiian culture and agriculture.  Adam will also share his experiences of growing kalo on Kauai.

A poi-pounding demonstration will follow.*

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required.
