Families are invited to celebrate the joys and challenges of chess in our Kauai Community Chess Tournament. The tournament is for ages Kindergarten through adult. All skill levels and ages are welcome. This is a made-for-families event. We encourage parents to play alongside their kids. The tournament is free to enter.
To register for the tournament, email sierra.hampton-eng@librarieshawaii.org. Please include the name of each player, contact phone, grade level or age, experience level, and chess rating (online or over-board) if you have one. The tournament will take place in the Lihue Public Library conference room.
Bring: A friend. Lunch or lunch money. All chess boards, pieces and clocks will be provided.
Format: A four-round Swiss-System, non-elimination chess tournament (everyone plays all rounds). We recommend that advanced players join the USCF (uschess.org) and plan to play in the free USCF rated section.
Sections: Beginner (for new players and grades 1-6), Intermediate (for players with some tournament experience and grades 7-12), Advanced (for experienced tournament players of all ages). It is required to write down moves of the games in the Advanced section.
Round Times: 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm. Awards ceremony at 5:30. Half-point byes available in any rounds in case you have other commitments on that day.
Time Control: In the Intermediate and Advanced sections, each player will have 45 minutes for the whole game with 15 extra seconds given for each move. In the Beginner section, each person will play two games per round with the same opponent, one with black and one with white pieces, and a time control of 25 minute per game with a 5 extra seconds per move.
Prizes: Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each section.
Parent Note: We recommend that you play for the fun of it. Beginners of all ages are highly encouraged to play. Players under age 16 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times!
Lunch: There will be a break from the end of your second game (approximately 12:30 pm) until the start of the third round at 1:30 pm. There are several fast food restaurants nearby.
