Bring: A friend, lunch or lunch money. Please bring your own regulation chess boards, pieces, and clocks.
Format: A four-round Swiss-System, non-elimination chess tournament (everyone plays all rounds). We recommend that advanced players join the United States Chess Federation (uschess.org) and plan to play in the free USCF rated section.
Sections: Beginner (for new players and grades 1-6), Intermediate (for players with some tournament experience and grades 7-12), Advanced (for experienced tournament players of all ages). It is required to write down moves of the games in the Advanced section. Learn how at chess.com or on YouTube. Current USCF membership is required to play in the advanced section, because they will be rated. Sign up in advance at www.uschess.org
Round Times: 9:30AM, 1:00PM. Awards ceremony at 4:30PM. Half-point byes available in any rounds in case you have other commitments on any of the days. Check-in December 20 9-9:30AM. First round starts 9:30AM.
Time Control: In the Intermediate and Advanced sections, each player will have 90 minute for the whole game with 5 extra second given for each move. In the Beginner section each person will play two games per round with the same opponent, one with black and one with white pieces, and a time control of 45 minutes per game with a 5 extra seconds per move.
Prizes: Amazon gift cards will be awarded to the top three finishers in beginner, intermediate, and advanced divisions.
Parent Note: We recommend that you play for the fun of it. Beginners of all ages are highly encouraged to play. Players under age 16 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times!
Lunch: There are several fast food restaurants nearby.
Registration: To register for the tournament, please RSVP owhcirc@librarieshawaii.org or call the library 808-622-6345 before 7PM on Wednesday December 18th, include: Name of each player, contact phone, grade level, experience level, and any chess rating (online or over the board).
