How Do We Monitor Volcanoes Using Earthquakes?

January 25, 2024 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

A Hawaiian Volcano Observatory technician replaces batteries at a monitoring station located on Hualālai. The station is powered by batteries that store energy generated by solar panels.

January is Volcano Awareness Month on the Island of Hawai’i!

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory earthquake specialist Arthur Jolly will present about the different monitoring signals and techniques that earthquake specialists use worldwide to understand volcanic unrest and eruptions. You will also learn about past volcanic eruptions throughout the Pacific basin, including recent eruptions at Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.
