In May of 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War, Nancy E. Lynch published a letter in her Delaware newspaper column from an Army Specialist stationed in Chu Lai, Vietnam. That began Ms. Lynch’s “Vietnam Mailbag” column, which ran through 1972. In her column Ms. Lynch printed hundreds of letters from Vietnam; letters filled with humor and sadness, reality and imagination, hardship and complaints. Now many of these letters, along with numerous photographs, have been collected into a lavish 456-page award-winning book.
During this free 50-minute program Ms. Lynch will read and discuss selected letters, in honor of “her guys”, the Vietnam veterans.
Sponsored by the Maui Friends of the Library. Ms. Lynch’s book Vietnam Mailbag: Voices from the War, 1968-1972, as well as a related DVD will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the program.
Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library (10 days for Oahu; 15 days for neighbor islands) in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
