Rachel Kingsley will give a presentation on the efforts to restore the Hawaiian crow to the Big Island. The Hawaiian crow or Alalā is native to Hawai’i and found nowhere else on earth. It is now extinct in the wild. However, thanks to the amazing success of the captive breeding program, there are now over 125 Alalā in captivity. Alalā face many threats to their survival in the wild. Identifying and reducing these threats will help the Alalā thrive. It arrived in Hawai’i before human settlement and adapted to Hawai’i’s unique environments. The crow spreads seeds of our native forest plants. Returning the crow can help revitalize and restore our beautiful Hawaiian forests.
