John is a native of the island of Hawaii. He is a self-taught slack-key guitarist and has numerous recordings to his credit. He was chosen as a Na Hoku Hano Hano Award winner in 1994 for instrumental album of the year, “Hoonanea”. He was also one of five nominees in 1995 and 1996 for his recordings of “Auhele”, “Manaolana,” and “Christmas Is”.
