Serving Kauai’s Rarest Seabirds: Addressing the Challenges of Research & Conservation

November 29, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Kauai seabirds

Kauai is the last main refuge in the world for the endemic Newell’s Shearwater, as well as holding internationally important populations of two other endemic species: the Hawaiian Petrel and the Band-rumped Storm-petrel.

The Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project conducts research on all three species and undertakes a wide range of conservation initiatives to help protect them and reverse their declines.

Guest lecturer Dr. Andre Raine will discuss these various initiatives and the challenges of working on extremely rare seabird species that nest mainly in the most remote and mountainous areas of Kauai. He will also talk about the importance of Kauai to these seabirds and why protecting them on the island is key to ensuring the species survive into the future.

Dr. Raine is the Project Manager for the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, where he has worked for the last six years. He has worked on a wide range of conservation projects around the world, include Malta, Bermuda, the Peruvian Amazon, Zambia, England and the Seychelles. His current research focuses on how to protect and conserve Kauai’s endangered Seabirds.

Due to a scheduling conflict, this event has been rescheduled from its original November 8, 2017 date to November 29, 2017. Mahalo for your understanding!
