Living With Earthquakes in Hawaii

January 8, 2020 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

earthquake damage of a house where the front panel of the house has been torn off

Tens of thousands of earthquakes occur each year in Hawaii, making it one of the most seismically active places in the United States.  Brian Shiro, USGS Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory seismologist, talks about what causes earthquakes in Hawaii, how they are monitored to help forecast volcanic eruptions, and the dramatic seismicity during Kilauea Volcano’s 2018 eruption.  Learn about historic damaging earthquakes in Hawaii, how you can prepare for the next “big one”, and more.  This presentation is brought to you in observance of 2020 Volcano Awareness Month, the USGS-Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and the Friends of the Libraries, Kona.

If you need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days prior to the program date.  We will make every attempt to fulfill all requests for accommodations.  All programs are subject to change.
