Have you ever wondered what the inside of a volcano looks like? If so, you should stop by the Liliha Public Library to learn about volcanoes and how scientists are integrating Hawaiian knowledge into earth science. There will be a fifteen-minute presentation on volcanoes, rock sample show-and-tell, and a hands-on gelatin volcano activity.
Children must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or caregiver.
Mahinaokalani (Mahina) is a PhD student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa at the Department of Earth Sciences. She uses the chemical composition of lava samples to interpret what a volcano’s “plumbing system” looks like. Mahina is also passionate about incorporating the knowledge our kūpuna left us about our volcanically active islands into her research and teaching.
Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible.
