Hawaiian Youth Abroad Poster Display

January 21, 2020 - February 21, 2020

Drawing of King Kalakaua

Between 1880-1887, 18 Hawaiians were selected and funded by the Hawaiian Kingdom government to participate in the Hawaiian Youth Student Abroad program, an educational and diplomatic program designed to train future leaders of Hawaiʻi.  After 126 years, the Native Hawaiian Student Services has “restarted” that program which allowed students to travel and create research posters about the original members of the Hawaiian Youth Abroad Program. Nānakuli Public Library invites you to come and learn about some of the Hawaiians who traveled the world in the 19th centruy with student posters featuring:

Liholiho * Kamāmalu * Boki * Liliha * Kekūanāoʻa * James Young Kanehoa Timoteo Haʻalilio * Alexander Liholiho * Lota Kapuaiwa * Emma Kalākaua * Curtis Iaukea * Henry Poor * Kapiʻolani * Liliʻuokalani * Pauahi Kaiʻulani * Kawānanakoa * Kūhio * Matthew Makalua Abraham St. Chad Piʻianaiʻa * Joseph Kamauoha * Robert Wilcox *

If you need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days prior to the program date. We will make every attempt to fulfill all requests for accommodations. All programs are subject to change. For a list of upcoming library events, visit test-library.ehawaii.gov/events
