For the Month of July, the HSL Book Group will discuss Last Boat Out of Shanghai by Helen Zia.
Zia sheds light on the mass exodus from China’s communist revolution and its continued impact on global politics today by chronicling the real stories of people who braved the unknown of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States. Instead of finding safe haven, however, many of these migrants found unwelcome attitudes and political hostilities that barred them, mirroring the experiences of present-day refugees around the world.
The HSL Book Group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Language, Literature, and History Section. New members are always welcome. No registration necessary. Inquiries about the Hawaii State Library Book Group can be directed to hslbookgroup@gmail.com or (808) 586-3499.
If you need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days prior to the program date.
