Edward “Butch” Porter has been working for more than 10 years to help prevent total coqui frog domination of the Kona region. Currently Porter is developing a library of coqui calls from individuals in different areas, which he believes vary in sound. Coqui frogs have no significant predators in Hawaii but do eat native and non-native insects and spiders. The main problem is that each individual coqui can produce hours of nighttime mating calls that are 90 decibels–this is as loud as a lawnmower. This free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona and the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
