Sidney Poitier became the first African American to receive an Academy Award in a leading role when he won Best Actor for his portrayal of an ex-GI who builds a chapel for a desert convent, becoming the answer to the mother superior’s prayers while endearing himself to the local townspeople and avoiding an arrest for a previous crime.
