All About Ulu

October 1, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Hawaii Ulu Cooperative logo

Join us for a screening of the short documentary, “The Roots of ʻUlu,” and informal talk-story with a founding member of the Hawai’i ‘Ulu Cooperative (HUC), Lauren DeMent. ‘Ulu, or breadfruit, is a traditional Polynesian staple now being “rediscovered” as an incredible source of nutrition and food security. HUC is working to revitalize this amazing food as a viable crop and dietary staple, contributing to Hawaiʻi’s sustainability as well as broader market demand. Established in 2016, HUC’s 40+ member-farmers employ diversified agroforestry practices with no toxic chemicals, the same way ʻulu has traditionally has been cultivated throughout Polynesia for millennia.

Open to all ages, this family-oriented event will include ʻulu crafts for the keiki as well as information about how to join or supply the co-op.

All programs are subject to change. If you require an auxiliary aid or accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days before the program date.
