At this talk, families will learn about food waste in Hawai‘i and how to save money and help the environment by wasting less food. Researchers estimate that a family of four in Hawai‘i wastes almost $2,800 worth of food every year! Reductions in food waste lessen the need for landfill space on our small island, and less food in landfills means reduced greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. Adults and keiki can also make their own “Eat First” sign to go in the fridge as a reminder to eat food that will spoil soon.
Presenter Marielle Bowman is a junior extension agent in Intergenerational Programs and Youth Development with UH-Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR).
