About

Welcome to the Manoa Public Library! Designed by architect Gary Kawakami of Architecture Plus, Inc., and built by Allied Pacific Builders on the site of the original library, our $10.3 million replacement library opened on June 9, 2012. Our environmentally-friendly library features free Wi-Fi, computer laptop area, separate programming room, photovoltaic solar panels, high-efficiency air-conditioning system, and covered parking for cars and bicycles. In 2013, Manoa Public Library was awarded the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification.

Musician Sun-Hui Hung

Celebrate Summer Reading! Our theme is E Heluhelu Kākou; Moʻolelo, and Hawaii’s public libraries will be celebrating the rich and varied stories that shape our communities.


“From the Sound of the Dragon to the Life of Erhu”, a lecture & recital by Dr. Sun Hui. She will be playing the Erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, and discussing the historical context for the instrument’s role in Chinese classical music composition, poetry, and philosophy. This free 45-minute event is suitable for ages 5 and older.

An Excellence Prize Winner of the National Erhu Competition in Taiwan, Dr. Sun Hui has performed at the National Concert Hall & National Opera in Taiwan, and throughout Europe and the United States.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i. This is a production of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program with additional funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the University of Hawaii.

Want to pick up crochet during the summer? Join the Mānoa Public Library’s YA Librarian for a beginner’s workshop on the craft. Learn basic information on crochet, how to start a project, stitches and finish the last loop.

This workshop has an availability of 10 slots and is open to all ages, however, priority will be given to teens (12 years old to 17 years old). Any participant outside the age range will be put on a waitlist and will be contacted for available slots. Children must be accompanied by parent/caregiver but will be counted for one slot. Supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own yarn and crochet hook.

Looking for something to do during the summer? You are invited to challenge the YA librarian on Video Games Day! Bring a friend or a family member to come to hang out and socialize with others while playing some video games. Compete or work alongside other players.

Most of the games can allow up to 4 players. Be ready to take turns and share.

You are welcome to bring your own devices and games to hang out in the room, too!

Did you miss the viewing or want to re-watch it? Come watch the well-loved sequel of everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood superhero in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse! Bring a small snack and water to enjoy during the film.

Thinking of crocheting a bag, cardigan or blanket? Join the Mānoa Public Library’s YA Librarian for a crochet workshop on learning the mesh pattern. Workshop will also go over how to start each project with tips and tricks. You are welcome to bring your own supplies, but they will be provided.

Recommended for beginning to intermediate crocheters who are familiar and have experience with the basic stitches.
