NASA’s InSight lander lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base on May 5, 2018, in the pre-dawn hours. This was the first interplanetary launch from the west coast. Now, approximately 6 months later, InSight nears the planet Mars. The lander will plunge through the thin Martian atmosphere, heat-shield first, and use a parachute to slow down. Then, it will fire its retro rockets to slowly descend to the surface of the Red Planet.
Watch the landing live! The viewing will be held in the First Floor Reading Room and is suitable for all ages.
