This exhibit of traditional hanaire is presented by Shofu Kai, a group of ceramists at the Hawai’i Potters’ Guild who have been studying together to learn about the artistry of utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony, a cornerstone of Japanese culture.
The hanaire (flower vase) with chabana (flowers) and ojiku (scroll) are prominently displayed in the alcove of a tea room. Each guest in a tea ceremony visits the alcove and respectfully views these tea utensils prior to the tea ceremony (sadou). As such, the hanaire plays a very important role in sadou.
This exhibit is available to view in the front lobby of the Library during regular library hours.
Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
