Beekeeping and Building Natural Beehives

April 22, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

A bee pollinating a flower

Ed Fenzl of the Community Seed Library (CSL) will provide information on the basics of beekeeping, a short introduction to the current bee decline crisis and how to support a “revival” of much needed pollinators, and resources for beekeeping services and how to purchase beekeeping products.

Be sure to attend the second part of Ed’s program, during which he will exhibit and demonstrate three natural beehives constructed primarily with recycled wood: 1) the Top Bar Beehive, 2) the Warre Beehive and 3) a Hexagonal “Bee Box” variation of the Warre hive. Ed will briefly discuss the conventional Langstroth Hive, and the Flow Hive, for comparison purposes.

Ed is a Certified Master Gardener with 30+ years in the landscaping industry. He owned and operated an organic farm for 8+ years which included construction and management of beehives. Ed was fortunate to receive training from Emmett Marx, a protégé of Les Crowder.

The CSL is sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona (FOLK).

Program schedule is subject to change. Contact the library 15 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.
