Hanau Ka Ua: Hawaiian Rain Names

December 6, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Authors of a rain book talk about rain names

Explore with authors Collette Leimomi Akana and her daughter-collaborator, Kiele Gonzalez, the rains & winds of the ‘aina through hula, mele & mo’olelo.

The recently published Hanau Ka Ua is the fullest record of Hawaiian rain names & their lore to date, drawing on oral tradition & literature, including approximately three hundred ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i primary sources from the nineteenth & twentieth centuries containing chants, songs, laments, & narratives.

In this 1-hour cultural presentation, the authors will discuss the process of researching their book, share descriptions of winds & rains from early nineteenth & twentieth century Hawaiian language newspapers & perform hula & mele which mention various winds & rains.

Sponsored by Friends of the Library Hawaii and Friends of Kapaa Public Library.

Program schedule subject to change.  Contact the library at least 15 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if special accommodations are needed.  For a list of upcoming library events visit test-library.ehawaii.gov/events
