Teen Writing Workshop

July 11, 2024 @ 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Arms wearing a pink sweater, writing on a piece of paper

Have you ever wondered how to “show, not tell” in your writing? Do you want to learn how to write a scene that comes to life on the page? In this workshop intended for teenage writers, we will pull from personal experiences to craft a scene that grabs the reader’s attention, focusing on sensory details and using effective narrative techniques. We will also read examples of scenic writing together, with the goal of emulating these authors in our own work. This workshop is a good fit for anyone who wants to work on scene setting–including for personal essays and statements!

Brittany Winland and Micah Lau are PhD students in the English Department at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where they teach creative writing, university-level composition, and literary studies. Right now Brittany is working on a climate fiction novel set in Appalachia. Micah is currently at work on a novel about Asian Americans in the healthcare industry.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. For a schedule of events, go to librarieshawaii.org/events.
