Junior Botanist: Plant Exploration

July 19, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Scientist analyzing a plant.

Become a junior botanist by coming to this event and learning all about plants! During this event, junior botanists will dissect Hibiscus to learn about the different parts of a flower. They will also start an experiment with Carnations to learn how water moves through the plants. These experiments will be sent home with the junior botanist for further observation.

Ana Flores is a Botany PhD student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa where she studies how plants deal with stress as they grow up. She is currently studying the native Pua kala (Hawaiian prickly poppy) to better know how Hawaiʻis plants will deal with a hotter, drier environment. She got her Bachelor’s in Miami, Florida where she studied an invasive plant in the wetlands. She uses experiments in the greenhouse or field to test hypotheses about plant survival and growth under stress.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible.
