Pilina Project – Manu, People, and Hawai’i

July 12, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Pilina Project July 12

Wednesday July 12th, 5:00 PM – Makawao Library

Please join us for a presentation about past, present, and future relationships among people, birds, and places. Noah Gomes, American Bird Conservancy’s Conservation and Justice Fellow, will be presenting the stories shared with him by community members about their pilina (intimate relationships) with native Hawaiian manu (birds).

A goal of his project was to continue the narrative started by Hawaiian’s centuries ago and use modern media to build a bridge from the past to our present moment and into the future. Noah has compiled the stories of pilina from the islands of Maui, Kaua’i, and Hawai’i Island into a story map. He is looking forward to sharing the results with the communities of Hawai’i and beyond.

Rachel Kingsley, Hawaiian Forest Bird Outreach & Education Associate, with Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project and the ‘Alala Project will join Noah to share information about the ongoing conservation efforts provided for some of the manu featured in the Pilina Project.
