This month, Teen Book Club will discuss Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus. in 1841, a Japanese fishing vessel sinks, and 14-year-old Manjiro is stranded outside of his homeland. Since Japan’s borders are completely closed, his only option is to take a ride from a passing American ship. Learning English and traveling through new lands, Manjiro learns about the changing world around him and eventually tries to return to Japan, despite the restrictions. This Newbery Honor Book is based on a true story.
