Protecting the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins

October 22, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

spinner dolphins

Ann M. Garrett, the Assistant Regional Administrator, and Adam Kurtz, the Wildlife Management Coordinator, from the Protected Resources Division/NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service/Pacific Islands Regional Office in Honolulu will present a program on protecting the Hawaiian spinner dolphins.  They will discuss the biology of Hawaiian spinner dolphins, how the dolphins use the shorelines and bays of the Hawaiian Islands, and why using these areas makes them particularly susceptible to human-related disturbances, making them at risk of too much attention.  Ann will share what is going on in other parts of the world with similar concerns about dolphin-directed activities, and with Adam Kurtz, she will share information related to NOAA’s proposed rule to enhance protections for Hawaiian spinner dolphins and the Dolphin SMART program, which is designed to support commercial viewing activities that minimize the potential for wild dolphin harassment.  This informative science program is brought to you by a generous grant from the Friends of the Libraries, Kona.

If you need an auxiliary air/service or other accommodation due to a  disability, please contact the library at least 7 days prior to the program date.  We will make every attempt to fulfill all requests for accommodations.  All programs are subject to change.
