Teens Raised $5,000 to Add Large Print Books for Keiki

A $5,000 check was presented to the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i from the seventh-grade class at Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) to enhance the collection of large print books for young readers. The new books will go primarily to the Ewa Beach and Waipahu public libraries, but they will be available to all readers in Hawaii State Public Library System.

HTA student Nadine Pascua and her younger brother, Greyson, love to read, and the family routinely took home stacks of books from the Ewa Beach and Waipahu public libraries. Nadine noticed that the selection of large print books that her visually impaired brother needed was limited. When her HTA teacher asked the class, “How can we positively impact our community?” Nadine created a pitch, sold it to her classmates, presented it to a panel of experts, and the walk-a-thon to raise awareness and funds was born.

In May, all 75 members of the seventh-grade solicited sponsors and walked or jogged for 30 minutes. Some of the teachers participated, as well. The original goal of $3,000 was far exceeded, and a total of $5,000 was raised.
