Welcome to the Kailua-Kona Public Library! Designed by architect George Iwasaki, our library opened on a leap day – Feb. 29, 1992. It is the second largest and second busiest library on Hawaii Island. We have a drive-through bookdrop and won an exemplary architectural design award from the Commission on Persons with Disabilities.
Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country.

Celebrate all things Taylor Swift in this fun program for all ages. Join us to make the friendship bracelets and take the moment and taste it! Watch some of the best music videos and enjoy themed snacks in honor of Taylor Swift. Themed snacks are generously provided by Friends of the Libraries, Kona (F.O.L.K).

This year, Star Wars Day falls on the annual Free Comic Book Day at Kailua-Kona Public Library!
Join the light (or dark) side for a day of free comics, activities, interactive presentations, enter the raffle for cool prizes, and pizza.

ALL DAY (9am-4pm): Comic book giveaways provided in part by Wonderberry’s Comics; photo booth; complete a passport to enter our raffle of awesome prizes! All ages welcome!
10am-11am: Character Sketch with graphic artist Wayne Lo (Adult Room) Suitable for ages 8+
11am-12pm: Children’s Lightsaber Craft (Children’s Room) while supplies last. Suitable for Pre-K to Grade 5
12pm-1pm: Kona Crust Pizza & drinks (Lanai) All ages welcome!
1pm-2pm: UH Mānoa Film Students Short Film Festival and Q&A with the filmmakers (Adult Room) All ages welcome!

Have you ever played chess? Do you want to learn? Are you an avid player and want to help others learn how to play?
Whatever your level of chess play we invite you to come and enjoy the game, learn new skills, share a little competition and get your chess on!
This program is open to all ages and levels of play.
We are dedicating a space every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-5:30pm with a limited supply of boards and a handful of volunteers to bring the excitement of chess to our community.

Join Kauʻi the Kids’ Librarian for an alphabet-focused story time to develop early literacy skills, including print recognition and phonemic awareness.
This program is suitable for keiki in preschool and those beginning independent reading.

Design and build a LEGO Community!
In this program series, you will have the opportunity to work with local architect Maziyar Rajaei of Oculus, LLC. to learn about what it takes to build a community from the ground up. This project will last between 6-9 months and repeat attendance to the events is highly encouraged. Building a community is not a one-person job, but takes teams. You’ll work together, building a community out of LEGOs!
